Indiana Computer Training Schools

Students interested in computer science can find a wide array of opportunities in Indiana. Since information technology is one of the key industries in the state, a large number of technology-based companies call Indiana home. In addition to technology-related firms, nearly every business that operates in Indiana needs computer specialists to maintain their computer networks and perform routine maintenance. As a result, big business in the state's restaurant, health care, hospitality and business sectors are in dire need of qualified computer programmers and other trained computer specialists.

Because of the demand for qualified tech workers in Indiana, job openings in this field are expected to surge during the coming decade. Specifically, the U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment for computer programmers will increase 15.7 percent in Indiana during the decade leading up to 2022. This surge is expected to bring 730 new computer programming jobs in Indiana during that time frame.

Fortunately, the state of Indiana is chock full of schools ready and waiting to meet this growing need. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), 56 colleges and universities in Indiana offer degrees or certificates in computer and information sciences and support services. While some of these schools focus on two-year computer science degrees, others offer bachelor's degrees or even graduate degrees. Meanwhile, many also offer technology-related certificate programs that can beef up a resume and prove efficiency in new technology-related fields. Some colleges even offer flexible, online education in computer science, which can make it easier for busy parents and working adults to earn or finish their degree.

Similar to other states in the country, computer science and IT degrees are offered by both the large, public colleges and universities and a number of small community colleges and tech schools.

In Indiana, some of the most prominent colleges and universities have computer science programs, including Ball State University, DePauw University, Butler University, Indiana State University, Anderson University and Indiana University. Popular technical schools and community colleges offering this degree include Ivy Tech Community College and Vincennes University.

Students who're considering computer training should first decide which type of degree to earn. For the most part, the larger, four-year schools in Indiana focus on bachelor's and graduate degrees in computer science and related fields. Meanwhile, technical schools and community colleges focus mainly on associate degrees and certificate programs.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employers typically prefer to hire computer programmers with a bachelor's degree or better. However, some candidates with associate degrees and work experience may have no trouble finding entry-level work.

Another major factor to consider in computer-related fields is certification. Students with all levels of education in computer science typically pursue several technology-related certs in order to prove their efficiency in certain software programs, or simply add to their resumes. As technology changes, earning certifications in new programming methods can also help workers keep their skills up to date. Furthermore, new graduates in computer science who get certified in several areas may experience better job prospects or be in a position to negotiate higher pay.
