Things are booming for Michigan’s high-tech workers. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation reports that 12 SmartZones and 7 Business Accelerators are leading initiatives in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, instrumentation and diagnostics. Other potential high-tech ventures include homeland security and alternative fuels.

Medical technology received a shot in the arm in 2007 as Michigan ranked 5th for electronic prescriptions. According to the Michigan Scorecard, the 2007 State New Economy Index ranks the state 19th in terms transforming its industrial-based economy to a knowledge-based economy. This paradigm shift in enterprise means a growing array of computer and information technology opportunities for in-state graduates and transplants in the coming decade.
