What is CIW (Certified Internet Webmaster)?

CIW is the largest Internet vendor neutral/job role IT certification. CIW establishes and certifies the skills required to compete in today's critical Internet, Web and ebusiness job markets.

Is CIW well known (will anyone have heard of this certification)?

CIW is the third largest vendor neutral IT certification and the seventh largest IT certification program. More then 20,000 CIW certifications have been earned to date.

What does CIW cover?

CIW encompasses a wide variety of topics, including basic Internet, internetworking, Web Site design, Web programming, Java, Internet server administration, security and e-commerce.

Who should consider the CIW program?

The CIW program is targeted at the following people:

Systems Administrators
Security Analysts
Software Developers
Database Managers
Web Designers or Webmasters
E-commerce designers or site designers

CIW targets career changers, business professionals, experienced professionals needing additional training and certification, and vendor-certified individuals that want to build on existing skills and knowledge. Common certifications that CIW certified individuals also have are: MCSE, CNE, A+.

Are there different tracks or levels in the CIW program?

Yes, candidates can earn their CIW at one of four different levels: associate, professional, or master. In addition, the CIW Master program offers 4 different tracks (areas of specialization): Administrator, Enterprise Developer, Designer, and Web Site Manager.

Are there any prerequisites?

Candidates for the CIW Associate do not need to have any experience with the Internet but should have a basic understanding of operating systems (Win9x/ME). Six months of technical experience with the Internet and related software or i-Net+ certification would also be helpful.

Candidates for CIW Professional and CIW Master will first need their CIW Associate certification.

What training options are available?

CIW authorized preparatory materials are available in traditional classroom settings, distance learning and self-study formats through the CIW Authorized Training Providers (ATP) network.

Will I make more money if I become a CIW?

No official salary surveys have been conducted for CIWs, but many employers are known to pay more for certified candidates and success stories from the CIW web site indicate that many people do make more money after earning this certification.

Are there any related certifications or alternative paths towards earning my CIW?

i-Net+ certified individuals are eligible for the CIW Associate. Intel and Novell both offer programs to migrate from their certifications to CIW. I-Accelerate is a "fast-track" program for Microsoft and Novell professionals wanting to earn the Master CIW Administrator certificate.
