Health Care Information Technology Training Courses

Health care information technology extends the scope of typical IT careers with accessible entry-level jobs as billers and coders, along with more advanced careers working on highly specialized medical instruments. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an aging population and a growing emphasis on preventive care have created high demand for health care IT workers. A 2009 government salary survey revealed that many billers, coders, and transcriptionists earn $15 or more per hour.

Medical Billing and Coding

Medical billing and coding training combines two fast-growing fields, health care and technology. Careers in these fields are projected to see faster-than-average growth in the 2008-2018 decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Medical Transcription

Medical transcription training is constantly evolving as a result of technological advances. An experienced professional discusses the tools of the trade.

Typical health care information technology training courses

Most entry-level health care information technology jobs require specialized training in one or both of these focus areas:

  • Medical billing and coding. Although computer technology continues to make health insurers more efficient, no two insurance companies use the same systems.
  • Medical transcription. Insurance companies and health care providers rely on detailed "longitudinal" records that track a patient's progress over time. Doctors, long notorious for poor handwriting, rely on transcription professionals to turn written or verbal notes into scientifically accurate notes about treatments, prescriptions, and surgeries.

Until recently, medical transcription, billing, and coding remained mostly behind the scenes at hospitals and health care providers' offices. According to a 2010 Department of Health and Human Services report, however, changes to health care regulations will force many doctors and insurers to adopt electronic medical records by 2015. With health care IT workers' output feeding databases available online for patient review, the pressure is mounting for employers to find workers who can operate the latest systems with near-perfect accuracy.

The Internet enabled a new wave of entrepreneurs to take on billing, coding, and transcription duties for multiple small practices. Harnessing common tools like wireless phones, MP3 recorders and tablet computers, doctors and nurses can quickly store key details that can be translated and coded by health IT professionals from remote locations. Some health IT professionals translate their experience into careers as nurses or physicians' assistants, while others leverage their experience into jobs managing hospital databases or repairing devices. Health care information technology courses help job seekers make the first step into new careers.
