Technical schools, technical institutes, and technical colleges generally offer degree or certificate programs in computer technology (for example: IT, programming, electronics). Many of these schools are accredited 2 or 4 year colleges. Programs cover a broad range of computer technologies rather then concentrating on one specific technology or software package. Many of these schools also offer other non-computer technical programs and some are also general study community or private colleges.

That depends on a number of factors. Many employers prefer to hire candidates that have a college degree and specifically a degree in computers. A longer program also gives you more exposure to the technologies you are studying and more hands on time with the technologies. However, if you already have a non-computer related degree, a shorter certificate program may be more appropriate.
