HTML Skills Crucial for New Computer Jobs

By Joe Taylor

While the first large wave of Web design and programming jobs was filled by coders who taught themselves HTML, most of today's computer jobs require a degree from a university or vocational school. This shift reflects the fast pace of today's business world, where investors and shareholders require shorter production times and little time for on-the-job Web training.

A recent government analysis of computer jobs revealed that more than two-thirds of computer programmers hold a degree from a vocational school or four-year college. The importance of education in all aspects of information technology appears to only be growing. Plus, now that HTML has become a core language for nearly all computer jobs, employers rely on vocational schools to teach job candidates Web design tools.

More Hiring Managers Look for HTML Skills on Resumes
With more companies realizing the need to maintain a strong presence on the Web, businesses of all sizes are hiring vocational school graduates and other professionals who can read and write HTML. Where large interactive agencies and experienced freelancers once dominated the Web design landscape, smaller companies and in-house departments have sprung up.

While Web design at larger companies may focus on site functionality and user-interfaces, smaller businesses want Web design professionals to manage multiple aspects of Web sites from design to programming, from maintaining the databases for online stores to coming up with a nice Web site logo. Many employers now blend computer jobs with traditional administrative and marketing tasks, making HTML an essential tool for business and communications students.

Salaries Still High, While Computer Jobs Expand Nationwide
Experts claim that a shift in demands for computer jobs may have slowed the rate of pay increases in the sector. However, the same experts note that more computer jobs for HTML experts are being created every day and that salary growth has not slowed like the rest of the U.S. economy. Whether or not you already hold a college degree, adding an HTML certification or a Web design degree from a vocational school can open up new opportunities.
