Computer Science Degrees

There has never been a better time to pursue a computer science degree. Computer science is not just a stable field -- it is a booming one. In 2009, Network World reported that computer-related careers were holding steady amid what it called the worst job market in 25 years, and in 2008, the Chicago Sun-Times named three computer science occupations among the top 10 recession-proof careers. Meanwhile, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) calls information technology one of the fastest growing industries in the country, information that stands counter to the common myth that computer science careers are being shipped overseas.

Demand for computer science grads is increasing, but research conducted by the Computing Research Association suggests that the number of people pursuing computer science training is not. This trend boosts both graduates' job potential and salaries: a National Association of Colleges and Employers report notes that while the average starting salaries of bachelor's degree holders declined overall between 2009 and 2010, computer science majors actually earned 4.7 percent more.

Computer science in a nutshell

According to the College Board, computer science majors learn about computer systems and the way people interact with them from a scientific perspective. They may specialize in areas like programming, software engineering, or computer architecture. In the career world, computer science graduates must be able to think both like a human and a machine, a skill that requires a great deal of creativity, imagination and logic. The ideal candidate must be precise and math-oriented, but also able to think abstractly.

Computer science training courses vary tremendously by program, institution and degree type. Some institutions approach the discipline on a theoretical level, while others emphasize the practical aspects of computer science and programming. The Association for Computer Machinery notes, however, that most should offer courses in the following areas:

  • Programming languages like C++, Java and C#
  • Platform technologies like .NET
  • Operating systems
  • Algorithms
  • Software development
  • Databases
  • Computer architecture
  • Graphics

Ideal careers for computer science degree holders

There are a number of careers for which employers either prefer or require applicants with computer science degrees. The following are just a few such careers, as indicated by the BLS.

  • Network, systems and database administrators
  • Software engineers
  • Computer programmers
  • Computer scientists
  • Computer and information systems managers

Note that all of these professions typically require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, though employers increasingly prefer candidates with master's degrees. Those who plan to work in research or academia must often earn PhDs. Professional and vendor certifications ensure candidates' skills are current, giving them an edge over other career competition.

Completing computer science training online

Computer science degrees are well suited for online learning. Unlike information technology disciplines that require students to handle different types of hardware, computer science is mostly programming-based. Contrary to common misconception, while online learning is a convenient way to complete computer science training, it isn't necessarily easier. To excel in an online learning environment, students must be organized and focused. Since many programs are asynchronous, meaning students access class materials and videos whenever they can rather than via a live class, they must also be solid self-starters and able to work well independently.

As with traditional programs, online programs vary from one institution to the next. In both cases, students should research a number of programs thoroughly before choosing the one that best suits their goals and learning styles.
